Position Details

What You Will Do

  • Conduct advanced property and casualty consultative services - including on-site inspections and desk reviews - on prospect and bound accounts, identifying exposures with significant loss potential and generating sound recommendations for risk improvement.
  • Prepare comprehensive risk assessment reports for underwriting teams and corresponding recommendation reports for policy holders and broker partners, detailing the use of the property, hazards observed, and actions required for risk improvement.
  • Communicate complex technical information and recommendations in a manner which is understandable and clear to underwriters, policyholders, and broker partners with varied levels of technical knowledge.
  • Organize and execute special projects - including the development of whitepapers, technical guides, and presentations - taking into consideration Echelon’s risk appetite and target audiences.
  • Collaborate with management in the onboarding process for incoming Technical Risk Service (TRS) staff on established departmental practices, procedures, and standards. 
    Supports the continuous improvement and growth of fellow TRS staff through technical training and regular coaching sessions, as required by management.
    Performs quality assurance audits on internal risk assessment and recommendation reports, ensuring that established quality standards are being met.
  • Assist management in the oversight of third-party vendors by conducting quality assurance audits on completed risk assessment reports.
  • Participate in continuous learning and development activities to improve oneself, sharing acquired knowledge with colleagues and policyholders through training seminars and on-site inspections, respectively.

 

Who You Are

  • Minimum of 8 years in property and casualty loss prevention, preferably within the insurance industry.
  • Post-secondary education with a focus on technical and/or engineering fields, including fire protection engineering, mechanical engineering, or building construction.
  • Industry-related designations including Chartered Insurance Professional, Canadian Risk Management, and/or National Fire Protection Association programs considered a major asset.
  • Proficient in identifying hazards and providing risk improvement solutions across small-to-medium enterprise, mid-market, and complex risks, including those in residential, commercial, and industrial applications.
  • Superior technical expertise in construction, building systems (i.e. electrical, heating, plumbing, etc.), process hazards, hazardous materials, fire protection, security, and premises liability.
  • Highly skilled in evaluating the design of automatic sprinkler systems in relation to occupancy hazards and storage applications.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of industry-related codes and standards, including the provincial Fire Code, Building Code, National Fire Protection Association standards, and Factory Mutual data sheets.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, with an ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to convey highly complex information in a manner which is understandable to underwriters, policyholders, and brokers.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with an ability to work through complex files and exercise judgement when dealing with ambiguous situations.
  • Highly-organized, with an ability to multi-task and be flexible with regards to workload and assignments.
